For a coach, hearing the sound of an athlete race across a gymnasium floor under the spell of an escaping ball can be quite thrilling. That thrill intensifies when there’s more at stake than an ordinary pickup game.

For most children with disabilities, a lack of organized sporting opportunities exist. TOPSoccer, a program created under a partnership by U.S. Soccer and the Louisiana Soccer Association is intended to help athletes reach their next level of physical and social advancement.

 This initiative with the LSA was introduced to Louisiana clubs and parks, including Chappapeela, in order to form soccer sessions in communities. TOPSoccer began on Sunday, August 26 at CSP, and is set to continue until Sunday, October 14.

The first camp in the Summer Skills Series included instruction of fundamental skills in volleyball and leadership drills.

Boys and girls ages 4-12 are encouraged to participate in the Summer Skills Series at Chappapeela Sports Park in the hopes of providing hands on coaching with emerging athletes.

Deputy Director Amber Grose explains that the series of camps will highlight the leagues offered by CSP throughout the year.

Under the threat of a storm, about half a dozen children flocked to Chappapeela Sports Park to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math.

Young students from the local area were led under Louisiana’s 2017 Teacher of the Year Joni Smith during the free STEM Athletes Program on Saturday, May 26.

Smith’s original inspiration for the camp was to educate students who she doesn’t normally teach science and math principles to through STEM activities during community outreach.
